Why not stay with us here, at Vindomora Country Lodges and discover more?
With so many stars it can be difficult to get your bearings, even for more experienced stargazers, so it’s important to understand a few basics…
The stars, the planets (including the earth), the moon and other heavenly bodies are constantly moving through space, on different trajectories and at different speeds. This means that stars and planets are in different places at different times of the year and some objects – comets for example – are moving in such a way that they might be visible from earth only once in a lifetime!
The good news is that one star ‘Polaris’ or the ‘Pole Star’ is always in the same place. So, by locating this, and with the help of star maps, you can start to navigate your way around the universe.
You can pick up a paper copy of a simple star map at Bowlees Visitor Centre in the Durham Dales, that shows you the locations of some of the brightest stars that you can see by looking due north or south in Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter...a great place to start your stargazing journey.
